Cloth Diapering Accessories- What is Necessary and What is not?

Once a family decides on a cloth diapering system, the next step is to decide which accessories are necessary and which are not.

Cloth wipes. Cloth wipes are a very important part of the cloth diapering system. Some people skimp over this accessory and find that tossing a wet diaper in once place and a dirty wipe somewhere else makes cloth diapering much more tedious than necessary. Cloth wipes can be tossed in and washed with the diapers. No extra step. Because wipes can be pricey, a common alternative is baby washcloths. These work fine, too. To make wipes convenient, place them in a diaper warmer or container designed for disposable wipes. Pour wet wipe solution over them so you always have a wet wipe ready.

Wipe solution keeps your cloth wipes wet and your baby?s bottom clean. You can use water as an alternative, but having solution around is much more convenient.

Wet bags. A wet bag is a waterproof bag you use to store wet and soiled diapers when you are away from home. One wet bag is necessary for all families, two or more may be useful if your child goes to a baby-sitter or if you have more than one child in diapers. The most common alternative to a wet bag is a plastic grocery bag. This will contain a wet or messy diaper, but probably will not hold the smell in. Of course, plastic bags are also very wasteful. Once your child is out of diapers, wet bags can be used to hold bathing suits or other wet or dirty items.

Pail liners are not necessary, but they are convenient. They will keep your pail clean, make a great travel pail, and can be washed with your diapers. Lining your pail with a garbage bag is not only wasteful, it creates an extra step. Why throw something away when you could just as easily wash it?

Diaper liners are also not necessary, but are nice to have a few around. They protect diapers from stains, powders, and creams, and make clean-up a little easier. An alternative is baby washcloths.

Inserts for pocket diapers are what make the diaper absorbent. In place of an insert, you can try prefold diapers or microfiber towels.
